Bristol Black Carers

Bristol, Somerset

Bristol Black Carers started in 1997 when carers from the Caribbean, African and Asian communities realised that there was no relevant service in health and social care to address their cultural needs. It became a registered charity in 2001 and has continued to provide services for these communities for the carers, cared-for and family/friends. We believe to truly support the carer we have to take the whole family into consideration.

Our approach is holistic and person-centered to for us to be able to provide and deliver the support that is priority for the individual. Our approach is not a medical or social model but a personal one where we Greet, Engage, Meet and Support the individual. This is called the G.E.M.S. approach and with this we see each person as a unique gem.

Greet -- we make the person fell welcome and respected to start building a relationship.

Engage -- we listen to help us understand what their needs are at present.

Meet -- working with them to understand what stage or level they are managing.

Support -- we work together to develop the action and steps to be taken.

This way we both work together for the best possible outcome and the impact is effective and relevant to the individual and family.
